2023 Little Berks
October 13-15, 2023

We hope you had a wonderful summer and are excited for cooler temperatures this fall. The Little Berks is upon us! Please join us at the Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook-Chicago for the 2023 Little Berks Retreat, October 13-15, 2023.

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to attend a meeting of the Little Berks, you should know that it is an opportunity to share work and community with a group of women historians whose work ranges widely across the historical profession.

The Berkshire Conference of Women Historians invites you to attend its annual business meeting, better known as the Little Berks. This is a comparatively small gathering, 40 to 50 people – rather than the 1500 to 2000 who attend our triennial Conference on the History of Women, Gender and Sexualities (or the Big Berks). Typically this smaller meeting includes panels on Friday and Saturday evenings discussing scholarship and issues facing the historical profession, with a business meeting on Saturday to discuss the direction of the organization. There are also opportunities to meet informally with other historians, to share ideas about themes for future Big Berks, and to raise concerns about the place of women in the profession.

We extend a special invitation to graduate students, contingent faculty and independent scholars who are looking for a professional home of sorts. We especially want to encourage those who wish to help us continue our work to decolonize the Berkshire Conference and ensure that our events and programming are welcoming and supportive for all scholars in our disciplines to participate.

Our meeting time is balanced between structured and unstructured time set aside to give you the opportunity to connect with old and new colleagues and enjoy the local area. The Lodge has beautiful grounds to walk together around, the Museum of Lapidary Art is nearby, and there is a spa, pool and fitness center for guest use.

New and old participants should remember to invite a colleague, a friend, or a student to join you.  The meeting is an excellent opportunity to build and maintain the kinds of connections that are crucial to our intellectual and professional health these days.

We will be able to offer subventions to graduate students, contingent faculty, and independent scholars, please be specific in completing that section of the form. Requests for subventions cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to accommodate as many as possible and will reply promptly to those who request support.  If you have questions about registration or the subvention process, please contact Stephanie Richmond or Tracy Parker.
